âIs the rest of the house secure?â I inquire as I continue to watch our unwanted guests.
âYeah. I did a quick once through earlier while you were resting,â Bryce assures. âAll windows are boarded up, and the backdoor in the kitchen area is secured.â
I yawn and rub my eyes, diverting my gaze for a split second. When I look back the creatures are gone. I peer to my left, then to my right, but I canât get a bead on their location. Fuck. I quickly move to the window to my left in search of their whereabouts.
A loud thud resonates from the roof. Tiny dust particles rain down from the ceiling as we both train our sights on the disturbance.
âWhat was that?â Bryce mutters as he reaches inside his worn brown trench coat.
Naked fear looms in his eyes as he pulls free a long wooden stake that has its tip stained with blood. I can almost smell his terror as he recoils from the dissonance.
âTheyâre just fucking messing with us. Trying to get us panicked so weâll do something stupid,â I calmly respond. âAs long as theyâre out there and weâre in here, weâre safe.â
The heavy-footed fiend traces along the rickety rooftop as a long strident wail emits from the outside wallsâalmost like nails being run over a chalkboard. The footsteps fade to the back of the house as I give pursuit. Bryce stays put.
My eyes stay focused on the ceiling as I shuffle through the kitchen to the back door. I press the side of my body just to the right of the door as I peer out through the wooden planks covering the smudged glass. I watch anxiously, waiting for the creature to leap from the roof and land before me. But thereâs nothing.
Where did it go?
A man suddenly appears in front of the glass. It bangs its fists against the rotting door, an amiable demeanor residing on its scarred, pale face. The creature bares its teeth, its fangs glistening with saliva as its tongue slithers out of its mouth. It presses the tip to the filthy glass and licks upward while staring at me the entire time.
My face contorts with disgust. I display the Kukri for the creature to see. It removes its tongue from the glass and points at me as it fades back into the blackness of night. I keep my firm and rigid stare, not showing an ounce of dread for the creature to feed off of.
âAmanda!â Bryce worriedly squawks from the other room.
I dash through the hall, and spot Bill sprawled out on the floor. His eyes are wide, lips smashed together as he palms the right side of his neck. Blood seeps through his tight grasp, pooling under his body as Bryce paces back and forth.
âWhat the hell happened?â I ask with a hoarse growl.
âI donât fucking know,â Bryce stutters as Billâs eyes glass over with tears. âHe came stumbling out here and just collapsed onto the floor. Didnât say a word.â
Bethany.
Something dashes to the other room to my right as the door to the room Bill and Bethany were in slams shut.
